Winter\u2019s Hinge<\/em> is a midwinter artwork by Kelly Ann Buckley (K-A-B) responding to Twelfth Night<\/strong>, an ancient seasonal threshold marking the end of feasting and the return to labour. Historically, this was a moment when order briefly softened: hierarchies were inverted, misrule was welcomed, and chance replaced status before the year\u2019s work resumed.<\/p>

The composition is structured around a central clearing - a hinge-space - flanked by opposing systems of bare, fractal winter branches. Stripped back yet still alive, they arc inward while clinging to rose hips and blackthorn berries, winter survivors that signal endurance, protection, and persistence through scarcity.<\/p>

Sun and moon appear as coins, partially veiled within the branches. Around the sun, an inverted medieval crown is subtly embedded, its thorns blurred to resemble fiery flames, the crown being a reference to Twelfth Night misrule, where authority was temporarily overturned rather than removed. Power remains present here, but unsettled, obscured, and held to account.<\/p>

Faintly traced in the night sky is the January Plough constellation<\/strong>, an ancient marker of agricultural time. Its presence gestures toward the inevitability of return: after misrule, after fire, after pause, labour resumes, guided not by hierarchy, but by the seasons themselves.<\/p>

Balancing stillness with disturbance, Winter\u2019s Hinge<\/em> operates as a threshold object rather than a depiction. It holds tension between human systems and seasonal intelligence, between chance and necessity, between what flips briefly and what endures.<\/p>

Alongside this digitally crafted edition, Winter\u2019s Hinge<\/em> continues as a series of alternate print versions and handmade textured one-off pieces incorporating clay, ash, and natural materials, as well as an accompanying sound work. Each iteration approaches the same midwinter hinge through a different material and sensory register.
