It was a hinge in time, a pause before labour resumed, and it was traditionally marked by a brief, deliberate disruption of order. Rules were inverted. Servants became kings. Games were played where chance, not status, decided who led. Noise, misrule and laughter were used to shake loose what had hardened over the dark months.

This wasn’t chaos for spectacle. It was organised misrule - a necessary disturbance, allowing the world to reset.

In Winter’s Hinge, that logic is held visually rather than illustrated. The work is structured around a central clearing, a space that withholds as much as it invites. On either side, bare winter branches arc inward, stripped of leaves but not of life. They cling to rose hips and blackthorn berries - winter survivors that speak of endurance rather than abundance, persistence rather than growth.

The branches tangle and entangle. They don’t resolve neatly. This is not a clean reset. Some things carry forward.

Sun and moon appear as coins, echoing the hidden tokens once baked into Twelfth Night cakes, where the chance discovery decided temporary authority. Around the sun, an inverted medieval crown is embedded, blurred, softened, turned upside down, lightly resembling fire flames of both the sun and hearth. Power is not removed here, but unsettled. Authority is questioned, briefly misaligned, and then allowed to pass.

In the night sky beyond the branches, a constellation is faintly traced: the January Plough. This is an ancient agricultural marker, a reminder that while human hierarchies may flip and falter, the land continues to set the terms. After misrule, after pause, after fire, the work returns. Not because we command it to, but because the seasons insist.

What interests me is the tension held at that point, between human systems and seasonal intelligence, between forgetting and remembering, between standing for a while at the threshold. Although modern life dictates a return to work - for many of us that means long days - daylight is still slow to return, as is life, of which we won’t see much sign of until Imbolc at the beginning of February. Beneath the surface of course, roots are gathering strength and finding their way.

This work is less about Twelfth Night as an event, and more about Twelfth Night as a behaviour: a moment when the world is allowed to gently and slowly tilt as it continues on the cycle.

Winter’s Hinge will appear as various versions continuing on a variety of products, as well as an accompanying sound work.

I love every part of winter, even January, which some can find depressing. For me it is about a slow return, being kind to oneself, taking time, and trusting new life is finding its way.

Winter’s Hinge artwork printed on organic products / fine art paper

Kelly Ann Buckley aka K-A-B's new artwork Winter’s Hinge is inspired by Twelfth Night - a moment in the seasonal year that marks the end of Yule.
K-A-B All In The Cloud / Flowers in the Clouds (c) (p) 2020 is the name of Version of a music piece for a new collection of cues and jingles, which has also inspired t-shirt designs for men, women and kids and wall art prints too.
I WROTE this piece of music and designed this print, with the global issue of habitat destruction in mind.
HERE'S part of a little soundtrack and video clip I made following a foraging trip with the Wild Almanac Collective, to a gorgeous pine forest in Kent.
