We both had a day off, were slightly hungover, and just decided to go for a meander away from the beaten track.

We visited a local park, hidden away like some kind of green oasis in the middle of the ordinary residential area of the suburbs of a coastal town.

I was surprised to come across a bale of turtles, looking like they were basking in the sunshine, on a wooden little handmade bridge in the middle of a pond. I'm not sure I've seen many turtles in my life, and it was quite remarkable and sweet if also slightly surreal to see them gathered there, necks and faces craning up, as if to get the warmth onto their faces. Every now and then, one would waddle down the wooden slide of the bridge, into the water.

Obviously this fascinating sight inspired a couple of digital prints, as well as a musical underscore created for licensing purposes. You can find the results by searching through the apparel section, or look at the collection named Creatures.

A short extract is below. You can hear more via the Music Licensing tab, on the Music page.

Anyway, realising I didn't know much about turtles at all, and wanting some inspiration for the design and the music, I found out some fun turtle facts:

A group of turtles is known as a bale.

They come in all shapes and sizes and live in a number of different environments. Many baby turtles start life as carnivores but grow to eat more plants as they mature.

Turtles spend most of their lives in water. They are adapted for aquatic life, with webbed feet or flippers and a streamlined body. Sea turtles rarely leave the ocean, except to lay eggs in the sand. Freshwater turtles live in ponds and lakes, and they climb out of the water onto logs or rocks to bask in the warm sun.

Turtles make involuntary hissing sound when they feel fear, by retracting into their shell and expelling air from their lungs. They also make chirping and clucking sounds, can make a roar, and whining sounds when they mate. Turtles also emit low frequency sounds underwater, which humans can't hear.

Sources : National Geographic, AllTurtles.com and Live Science.

I’M well excited and thrilled to be working on a soundtrack to accompany the work of a very exciting contemporary visual artist, called Ruth Jones.
