K-A-B Yield + Resonance : The First Wave | Windmill<\/p>

Yield + Resonance<\/em>, my latest art and sound collection<\/u><\/a>, was sparked during a visit to Mountnessing\u2019s old windmill in Essex earlier this spring. Built in 1807 and restored to working order, this fascinating building made me feel so connected to history. It was more than just a structure - it was a space filled with traces of the past, etched into its fabric.<\/p>

Inside the windmill, the wooden timbers told their own story. Carvings of strange symbols, roughly scratched out images of the mill, and worn, indecipherable names etched deep into the oak beams made me wonder. Were these marks left by workers as they stood waiting between toiling for the wind to turn the sails? What conversations filled this flour-covered space over the years, as the people in it looked out onto the fields and farmland that must\u2019ve been so important to their lives?<\/p>

As I moved through the mill, capturing video and images, I inadvertently and completely unknowingly recorded a conversation from another visitor, who was imagining the sounds the mill would have made. This moment of synchronicity - me imagining the old sounds and then recording this present-day voice - a complete stranger - speaking about how he imagined them -solidified the concept of Yield + Resonance<\/em>. It is a collection about past and present merging, about the cycles of labour, harvest, and sound that echo through time.<\/p>

One of the features that stood out in the mill was a small bell. Its sound once warned of potential fire hazards - a reminder of the delicate balance between industry and nature. If the millstones ground too close together, sparks would fly, and the flour-dense air could ignite. That small bell must\u2019ve stood like a guardian over the rhythm of the mill\u2019s work. I imagined the layered soundscape of the mill, the whirring of the sails, the grinding of the stones, and the voices of those who relied on this building for their livelihood.<\/p>

In the lower part of the mill, corn dollies - traditional effigies made from the last sheaf of wheat - were encased. In ancient Britain, these figures were woven to celebrate the harvest and ensure the fertility of the soil for the next year. These dollies felt like a tangible link to the ancestors of the land, of hope and of sowing and reaping.<\/p>

Walking beyond the mill into the fields, the crops brushed my legs, still green and full of life. The tractor tracks etched into the ground spoke of labour and toil, soon to yield a harvest. I imagined the transformation that would come later, the tall crops bending and ready to be harvested. It was here, among these imprints, that I knew this moment would evolve into a future collection, ripe for release in autumn, around the time of the autumn equinox and the full harvest moon.<\/p>

The autumn equinox marks the balance between day and night, a moment of stillness in the cycle of the seasons, just as the harvest moon signifies completion, gathering, and reflection. Both moments resonate deeply with the themes of this collection - cycles of labour and reward, sowing and reaping, of past voices carried forward through time. The colour palette reflects the season\u2019s natural tones.<\/p>

I\u2019m excited to introduce the first releases of Yield + Resonance<\/em><\/strong> of a series that draws inspiration from these ideas. As the season deepens into winter, more works will follow, including sound pieces that bring these ideas into an auditory realm.<\/p>

The wording around the edge reads: \u2018Sowing and Reaping. Reaping and Sowing\u2019. It is overlapped to depict the layers of conversations through the years. If you look closely you will see that the \u2018harvest moon\u2019 is not made of cheese, but parts of the mechanics of the mill.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>
