Echoes in the Fossils<\/h2>

Kelly Ann Buckley (K-A-B) was commissioned to create this project for Focal Point Gallery's FPG Sounds initiative. It was part of the gallery's online exhibition programme from October 21 - January 22, and is now on the Focal Point Gallery's podcast<\/a>. In the five part resulting audiovisual works, K-A-B looks at the parallels between the devastation of a rich Mesolithic landscape called Doggerland, lost to the North Sea 8,000 years ago and the potential disasters we are facing thanks to the current climate emergency, which looks set to wipe out parts of the world, including Essex, by 2050.<\/p>

Parts of Baing Magna, Shoeburyness, Southend, Westcliff, Chalkwell, Leigh and Canvey - areas local to Buckley - will be some of the first areas to go.\u00a0The project poses the same questions asked by scientists today:- \u2018can the epic disaster which submerged Doggerland, happen again?\u2019<\/p>

The mystery and depths of the rising sea, the beauty and aural frequencies produced by melting ice and the loss of communities\u2019 soundscape ecology are explored through immersive audio-visual experiments using binaural, hydrophone and contact mics and midi controllers which turn organic materials\u2019 electricity into sound.\u00a0<\/p>

Imagined futurist sonic remnants of the Anthropocene epoch are echoed from \u2018inside\u2019 techno fossils, used as conductive and visual aids to produce sound when touched by human hand. The techno fossils were created by K-A-B using plastics and metal waste, collected from the local shorelines that will be gone by 2050.<\/p>

The final part of the project is a composition titled After the Anthropocene accompanied by moving image. The artwork within the moving image sees K-A-B use photos of a human, seaweed, various plastics, pebbles, beach, and sea life combined with artificial intelligence to mock nature\u2019s evolution process to create a futurist aquatic-polymer-human hybrid.<\/p>

Echoes In The Fossils hopes to stimulate the audience\u2019s aural senses to provoke emotions, questions and action.<\/p>
