I'd been really busy and felt very wired and tired at the same time, trying to do a number of things at once, brain working overtime, going to bed over stimulated and not sleeping enough. Anyways, I'd promised my sons I would take a day off and we'd go to said beach where they would get my full attention. I remember thinking how lovely it was, to genuinely take that time to legitimately do something where there's not too much else to do other than chill. Once I'd had a swim with the kids, eaten a sandwich, there was blissfully nothing else to do other than people watch, watch the boys bury each other umpteen times over, and lay back and look up at the clouds.

The clouds that day were striking, drifting in individual little puffy patterns, like lots of flowers in the sky. Of course I had my phone on me, and so made a little video and took some photos.

I had already made a start on working on an untitled piece of music for a collection of cues and soundtracks, where I had re-sampled some drum beats I'd already created into patterns for something else. It hadn't really 'become' anything at that point. Given my state of constant adrenaline at the time - I tend to mostly create music according to the emotional state I'm in - the piece was pretty fast paced. When I went back to it, I felt like the cloudy flowery footage should go with it, and I started to put more crashes and filters into the piece to sculpt it into a cloudy mix. I'm not sure why.... neither clouds or flowers would ordinarily make me think of fast and furious beats, but I think the patterns within the clouds, which were dark and moody, the tinge of yellow and pink from the sun flashing through and the deep blue-grey swells of rain which threatened to burst, led me to pull out certain abstract thoughts.

The more I produced the music piece and looked at the imagery of the clouds, the more I felt inspired to create something that might look good on a t-shirt. I decided on two different designs for my Symbols Not Cymbals collection, which is all about looking at basic pattern and shapes. One sketch was more led by very obvious shapes of flowers, of sun yellow, with the cloud configuration making up the patterns within the petals. I'd just bought some big brown square sunglasses and maybe was subconsciously on a 1970s tip. The design started to feel quite 70s to my mind, with big leaf patterns going through the petals also, added brown and faded tint, as if the t-shirt print is quite vintage. That design became Flowers In the Clouds. In the other sketch I layered up very basic, almost cartoonish cloud shapes on top of each other, and blended them with a number of composites of the photos of the clouds, and pulled out the colours and accentuated them. I liked the way the rudimentary shapes and definite cloud blues, pinks and greys worked with the reality of the photos. That design became All In The Cloud. The layout of the designs differ a little bit between the men’s, women and kids versions and these are printed on both sides for men and women.

K-A-B All In The Cloud / Flowers in the Clouds (c) (p) 2020 is the name of the piece of music also. I thought about going for a separate yet cloud related title for the music, but maybe I was all clouded out by then.

Edit: Another version of the song (different to the one shown below) was developed and released for sync licensing purposes, titled Up In The Clouds.
